COD Men’s Basketball fights hard in close loss to Monarchs, 76-72

COD (1-6) got another 25+ point performance out of Walker Weir and a pair of season highs out of Steve Shuffleton and Jack Durant, but the Roadrunners fell short on the road at the Los Angeles Valley Monarchs of Valley Glen (1-4), 76-72.
Desert has had a string of bad luck, falling by 4-points in four different games, but it feels as though they are close to turning a corner and flipping these close losses into close wins.
Sophomore starting guard Wilfred Weir (Murrieta Valley) led the Roadrunners with his 4th 25+ point effort of the season, scoring 25 points on 8 of 20 shooting, including going a near perfect 7 of 8 from the free throw line and leading the team with 2 steals. Freshman starting forward Stephen Shuffleton (Palm Desert H.S.) added a season high 16 points on 8 of 11 shooting and freshman starting guard Jack Durant (Indio H.S.) contributed a season high 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting, including going 3 of 7 from three-point range. Sophomore starting forward Jamerson McClendon (Indio H.S.) added 8 points on 4 of 6 shooting, leading the team in blocks with 2 and adding 7 total boards. Sophomore starting center Sedrick Johnson (Phoenix (AZ) Skyline Prep) added 8 points on 3 of 4 shooting and lead the team in boards (8) and assists (6). Freshman forward Jacob Sells (Upland H.S.) leapt off of the pine to lead all bench scorers with 4 points, 2 for 2 from the field, and 4 total boards, all defensive.
The next game for the Roadrunners is in the first round of the SBCC Holiday Classic in Santa Barbara on Thursday, December 12 at 7p against the host Santa Barbara City Vaqueros (1-5).
