COD Women’s Basketball opens up season with win over the Seahawks, 100-61

COD (1-0) grabbed their first win since December of 2022 and grabbed their first win with 100 or more points since February of 1999, as the Roadrunners won on the road, knocking off the Los Angeles Harbor Seahawks of Wilmington (0-1), 100-61.
Since 2000, the Roadrunners hold an 3-4 overall record against LA Harbor. Over that period of time, Desert has not played a home-at-home, only meeting the Seahawks in tournament play. The most recent time the Roadrunners played LA Harbor was in 2015, where Desert defeated the Seahawks, 69-46 in the first round of the Desert Winter Classic on December 17th.
New head coach Henry Nguyen got his career with the Roadrunners started on the right track with the win, as freshman guard Giovanna Espinoza (La Quinta H.S.) led all Desert scorers with a double-double, 33 points on 14 of 34 shooting, including 5 of 16 from beyond three-point range and 11 steals. She also added 2 blocked shots. Freshman guard Audrey Tijerina (La Quinta H.S.) had 19 points on 8 of 17 shooting along with 8 assists. Sophomore guard Esperanza Figueroa (Thermal Coachella Valley) also added 19 points on 7 of 18 shooting, including going 5 for 9 from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Olivia Castaneda (Menifee Paloma Valley) added 18 points, nearly missing a triple-double with 9 assists, 7 total rebounds, 4 offensive, and 5 steals.
The next game for the Roadrunners will be in the first round of the PC Pirates Crossover at Porterville College on Wednesday, November 6 at 5p where they will face the host Porterville Pirates. Since 1994, the Roadrunners hold a 3-1 overall record against Porterville, only meeting the Pirates in tournament play. The last time these two teams matched up was November 2, 2019, where the Roadrunners fell to Porterville, 70-50 in the second round of the San Bernardino Valley Tournament.
