Valdez, Fuentes earn 3CFCA Players of the Week honors
The players led their teams to big upset wins.
LOS ANGELES — Cuesta's Emily Valdez and Fullerton's Allyson Fuentes have been named the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association (3CFCA) Players of the Week.
Valdez picks up Player of the Week accolades after she led Cuesta in a pair of wild action-filled, extra-inning games against No. 3 Monterey Penninsula. In game one, she got the Cougars on the board when she blasted a three-run homer to put Cuesta up 3-1. In the eighth, she singled to get on base and scored the walk-off run later in the inning to give the Cougars a 10-9 win. She nearly led her squad to a sweep of the Lobos in game two before Cuesta narrowly fell 6-5 in eight innings.
Valdez finished the week with a .750 batting average off six hits with a home run and a double against one of the state's top teams. She scored five runs, totaled three RBIs, and added a walk. Valdez currently ranks fifth in the state with 17 stolen bases and sixth with 29 runs.
Fuentes earns Pitcher of the Week honors after lights-out performances in a pair of wins for No. 9 Fullerton. She opened the week by holding No. 4 Cypress to just one run to lead the Hornets to a 4-1 complete-game win. She struck out three batters in the outing while scattering six hits. She got out of a jam in the fourth inning with runners on second and third with just one out. Fuentes struck out the next batter and then forced a ground out to end the inning.
Fuentes finished the week pitching four innings of relief against Santa Ana to pick up her 10th win of the season. She finished the week with a 0.64 ERA with five strikeouts and just two walks. Her 10 wins are the sixth most in the state.
