Rosales Coria, Harbor repeat as women champs; Mt. SAC men grab 6th SCC cross country title in a row
CERRITOS - Brenda Rosales Coria repeated as the individual champion and led her Los Angeles Harbor College women's cross country team to its second straight South Coast Conference title while Mt. San Antonio captured its sixth consecutive crown at the SCC 2018 Championships held Friday at Cerritos Don Knabe Community Regional Park.
It was LA Harbor's first outright title after sharing the crown last year with Mt. San Antonio, which placed second as a team. The Seahawks had three of the top four finishers including Rosales Coria winning the 5-kilometer race in 17 minutes, 44.1 seconds. Mt. SAC's Rebecca Ruiz, who was fifth overall at last year's meet, placed second at 17:49.8. Six of the seven freshmen who were All-SCC last year accomplished the Top 14 honor as sophomores. The highest finish by a freshman was turned in by Mt. SAC's Sadie Encinas in fifth place (18:28.7).
Mt. San Antonio continues its reign as the King of Men's Cross Country with four top 10 finishers and the champion in sophomore Salvador Capetillo, the only racer to break the 20-minute mark in the 4-mile course at 19:48.1. He took home the first place medal, finishing 17 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. In a mini upset, Harbor letterman Ariel Conde (20:05.8) stole second in a photo finish over El Camino's Carson Bix as he hit the line only .01 second in front of the third-place Bix (20:05.9). Bix was 13th and All-SCC at last year's race. The 2018 top freshman was El Camino's Manny Gil in fourth (20:12.3).
The Mounties won their 20th South Coast men's title in the sport. El Camino took second place.
