Cerritos Finishes on Top at the Inaugural CCCAA Women’s Wrestling Championships

The Cerritos Falcons claimed the first ever championship at the inaugural CCCAA Women's Wrestling State Championships.

NORWALK, Calif. - At  the inaugural California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women's Wrestling Championships, the Cerritos College Falcons ran away with the hardware as they finished first as a team with 129 points while seeing four individuals claim top spots on the podium at the end of the day. 

The Falcons completed a big first season for their program as they also claimed the State Dual Championship back in March. 

"It feels great to be the first ever Women's Team Champions," said Cerritos Head Coach Dustin Kirk. "To be able to host a championship for these girls and make sure they have a true championship feel is great. I'm happy to give another opportunity for women in athletics."

Finishing closely behind was Mt. San Antonio College, who challenged the Falcons with 110.5 points while watching three individuals earn championships.

East Los Angeles College placed third with two champions and 77 points as they narrowly beat out Fresno City College, who finished fourth at 76 points. Rounding out the top five teams was Sacramento City College, closing the day with 59 points.

Coming in sixth was Santa Ana College (54.5), followed by Palomar College (47), Santa Rosa College (43.5), Bakersfield College (27) and Moorpark College (0).

102 lbs: Jessica Hong (Cerritos) had the quickest route to a championship as only Alexis Hazelton (Sacramento City) stood in her way. Hong secured her gold medal with a fall at the 1:33 mark, giving Cerritos their first champion. 

109 lbs: Ruby Rivas (Mt. San Antonio) worked her way into the 109 pound championship after defeating Evelyn Lozano (Santa Ana) with a fall in the first round. She then went on to outscore Lucy Guadarrama (Cerritos) 11-5 in the final to secure the top spot. 

116 lbs: Alyssa Rodriguez (Cerritos) collected two falls over Miya Galvan (East LA) and Hailey Teodoro (Mt. San Antonio) to become the individual champion in the 116 pound division.

123 lbs: The 123 pound bracket was one of the most competitive brackets in the tournament with nine individuals battling for podium spots. Delilah Felix-Lopez (East LA) had an impressive day as she advanced with a fall followed by an 8-5 win over Jade Morales (Santa Ana) in the semifinals before knocking off Bella Devoto (Santa Rosa) 7-5 in the final.

128 lbs: Megan Irwin (Mt. San Antonio) dominated the 128 pound bracket as she rolled past her opponents with three falls and a technical fall to give the Mounties another champion.

136 lbs: With three falls to claim first place in the 136 pound bracket, Sofia Vergara (Mt. San Antonio) went home with the gold medal while helping Mt. SAC place second as a team with their third champion.

148 lbs: Aine Drury (Cerritos) entered as the favorite in the 148 pound bracket and took care of business with two quick fall results to earn first place in the division. "I'm really proud of us as a team," said Drury.  "We really worked hard all season and are always taking care of each other. Today feels good." The freshman finished the season undefeated at 24-0 while helping Cerrtios take home the team championship.

160 lbs: Palomar saw Sierra Mefford blow past the competition the the 160 pound bracket with three falls and a technical fall to earn 22.5 out of her teams 47 points. 

180 lbs: Nile Jernigan (Cerritos) checked in as the fourth champion for the Cerritos Falcons winning two bouts by fall at 180 pounds. 

220 lbs: East LA wrapped up the day by watching Isabella Calle become the champion of the 220 pound bracket after cruising through with three falls on the day.
