SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Sierra College got all of its goals from different scorers on Friday while goalkeeper Danielle Brown made 11 saves as the Wolverines edged defending state champion Riverside City College, 6-5, in the first semifinal of the California Community College Women's Water Polo Championships at Cuesta College.
Sierra's (25-5) win propels it into Saturday's championship game against the winner of Friday's other semifinal between Santa Barbara City College and San Joaquin Delta College. The Tigers will play for third place on Saturday at 10:45 a.m.
Katy Peterson scored twice in the first quarter, including once on a 5-meter penalty shot, as Riverside answered Stephanie Friesen's opening goal for Sierra to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Nikkol Weber gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead midway through the second quarter before Alexandria Jasso and Shanti Reisinger scored consecutive goals just over a minute apart to help Sierra tie the score at halftime, 3-3.
