AVCA tabs Feather River's Gott, SD Mesa's Speratti on 2-Year Sophomores to Watch List
The American Volleyball Coaches Association selected Feather River College middle blocker/outside hitter Sydney Gott and San Diego Mesa outside hitter Sabrina Speratti on the 2020 AVCA Two-Year Colleges Sophomores to Watch list.
The list recognizes two-year college players with the volleyball community, according to the program's director Paula Wiedemann. Last year, eight of the 10 top sophomores across the country ended up earning AVCA All-American status.
"These athletes were selected in the spring and even though COVID-19 has had a big impact on volleyball, the two-year college community wanted to make sure to acknowledge these student-athletes, their coaches and programs in this unique 2020-2021 season," Wiedemann said.
As a freshman, the 6-foot-3 Gott helped FRC win its first-ever CCCAA state championship. Gott was voted to the All-State Tournament team as well as All-Golden Valley Conference First Team. She totaled 10 kills and a match-high eight blocks in the team's championship final win over Irvine Valley. Gott is expected to move to outside hitter for her sophomore season. Gott, who was fourth in the state in block kills at a 1.11 average per set and averaged 2.29 kills, is guided by Golden Eagles head coach Sarah Ritchie.
The 5-11 Speratti, who has played at opposite, recorded 16 kills and 29 digs in two SoCal Regional playoff matches for Mesa last season when she was an All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference First Team selection. She averaged 2.84 kills and was second on the team in service aces with 40.
"Sabrina is one of our best all-around players," says Olympians head coach Bobbie Jo Stall. "She has a heavy arm, can pass well, serve well, block well and terminate on either pin. She works hard off the court in strength and conditioning and does exceptionally well in the classroom as well. Sabrina is reliable, responsible, respectful and is very sweet to her teammates. She is a great young lady!"
