(PASADENA) -- At 5-0, Sierra College is the only undefeated team currently in its conference, but there are remarkably three other Big 8 Conference squads ranked in the top 10 above the #14 Wolverines and five overall among the top 20 showing the impressive strength of that conference in the sixth 2019 CCCWVCA State Women's Volleyball Top 25 released Monday evening.
The Big 8 features #6 Folsom Lake (12-3), #7 San Joaquin Delta (13-5) and new #10 American River (12-6), the defending state champions, that rose 10 slots with big victories over Delta (a sweep) and #8 Cabrillo (five sets) last week. After Sierra, Santa Rosa is slotted at #19. In all, the Big 8 makes up 20 percent of the ranked teams.
Meanwhile, the cream of the crop continue to be the state's top 3 in #1 and still undefeated Irvine Valley (13-0), #2 Feather River (23-2) and #3 Fresno City, a team that hasn't surrendered higher points than in the teens during its last 12 sets and is on an 8-match winning streak all by sweeps. At #4 San Diego Mesa (16-3) moved up a spot after handing #5 Grossmont (16-2) its first loss to a CCC team in 18 matches (the Griffins other defeat was against Glendale Arizona). Mesa is in the midst of a 9-match win streak and the Olympians have won their last 23 sets consecutively. Moorpark stayed in the top 10 at #9, but did not play last week.
The next 10 has Bakersfield at #11, El Camino moving up four slots to #12, Chaffey remaining at #13 behind an 11-match win streak, Sierra at #14, Long Beach City at #15, MiraCosta continuing to slip now at #16 after a 5-set upset loss v. unranked San Diego City, Pasadena City falling two spots to #17, Fullerton maintaining #18 with a 6-match win string, SRJC at #19 and West Valley with yet another upset defeat to a non-Top 25 team in Gavilan (four sets) at #20.
Rejoining the Top 25 are #23 Foothill and De Anza at #T25. Also in the elite 25 (26 of late) are Cypress at #21, Orange Coast at #22, Canyons at #24 and San Mateo holding on at #T25.
