(PASADENA, Calif.) -- Fresh off a championship title at the 20th Delta Classic tournament and with a sparkling 8-0 overall record, Feather River College was selected as the No. 1 team on the first 2019 CCCWVCA State Women's Volleyball Top 25 on Monday.
The Golden Eagles went 4-0 at the 16-team tourney, the biggest in the state annually, and scored victories over San Mateo (sweep), Gavilan (four sets), Fresno City (five sets) and San Joaquin Delta (in four) in the championship match. FRC libero Kayla Joyce was named MVP of the tourney and was also a CCCWVCA State Player of the Week for her performances. She totaled 95 digs in the tourney.
Irvine Valley (5-0) comes in at No. 2 and tops from SoCal. The Lasers were the top South team last year and have five sweeps to their credit this season, one over T25-ranked Canyons.
Fresno City (4-1), last year's state runner-up, won a rematch with defending state champ American River in four sets and settled in at #3. At No. 4 is undefeated Bakersfield, 6-0, after winning tough 5-set matches over both #21 Long Beach City and Pasadena City Colleges. At #5 was Delta (7-1), a team that saw a 7-match win streak snapped in the loss to Feather River. Undefeated Grossmont (5-0) came in at #6, followed by West Valley at #7 and Cabrillo at #8.
The big surprise is Pasadena (6-1) coming in at #9. The Lancers started the season on a 6-match win streak before falling to talented Bakersfield in five sets. This is PCC's first appearance on the state top 25 since 2013. Cypress rounded out the top 10 with wins over #18 El Camino and #11 MiraCosta to its credit and a loss to PCC.
American River, last year's state champs, were at #12 but with an under .500 record at 3-4.
Pasadena was one of five new teams on this year's initial rankings after not being on the final 2018 poll. The others are De Anza at #14, San Mateo at #19, Chaffey, an upset winner over Long Beach City, at #20, and Golden West at #24.
