Unbeaten Cabrillo, Irvine Valley open first CCCWVCA poll of the year in top two spots
CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings (Sept. 11)
PASADENA, Calif. - Cabrillo (4-0) wins the Delta Classic, rallying to beat defending state champ Fresno City in 5 sets (23-25, 15-25, 25-13, 25-15, 15-10) in the final and takes the state No. 1 spot in the first 2017 State Women's Volleyball Top 25 Rankings. Irvine Valley (5-0) is at No. 2 and tops in the South region with a 4-set win over No. 3 Canyons, the winners of the Pierce Kickoff Classic. Bakersfield (7-1, with its only loss to Canyons) settles in at No. 4 while Fresno (6-2) comes in at No. 5. Rounding out the top 10 are No. 6 Grossmont, the SD Mesa Invitational champs, #7 San Joaquin Delta, #8 Pierce, #9 El Camino and #10 Feather River.
Twenty-two teams that were on the final 2016 Top 25 remain in this first ranking. No. 14 Santa Rosa, No. 24 San Diego City and No. 25 Orange Coast are newbies in the Top 25.
Six teams are still undefeated in the state in Cabrillo, Irvine Valley, El Camino, #15 Folsom Lake, San Diego City, and unranked Ohlone.
No. 12 Butte leads the state in victories thus far with 9.
The team making the most noise in the Best of the Rest is Solano, who gave #17 Gavilan a scare in a wild 4-set war won by the Rams,
20-25, 28-26, 29-27, 25-23. Solano is 5-5 but has played a strong early schedule that has included Fresno, Delta, and Butte. In 11 of the 15 losing sets in its defeats, Solano reached 20 points or more.
