Fresno Dominates In Sweep Over Cypress

A powerful attack from all over the floor allowed North No. 2 seed Fresno City College to do what it has been doing all season---sweep an opponent. But this time, it was the Rams taking out Orange Empire Conference champion and South No. 3 Cypress, 25-20, 25-19, 25-15, in the CCCAA State Championship quarterfinals Saturday at Pierce College. The sweep was the 23rd time this year Fresno performed the feat.

A powerful attack from all over the floor allowed North No. 2 seed Fresno City College to do what it has been doing all season---sweep an opponent. But this time, it was the Rams taking out Orange Empire Conference champion and South No. 3 Cypress, 25-20, 25-19, 25-15, in the CCCAA State Championship quarterfinals Saturday at Pierce College. The sweep was the 23rd time this year Fresno performed the feat.

Jenna Goldsberry hit .400 and led the attack with 13 kills, followed by Sydney Molander, who scored 11 kills and hit .444. Another key hitter was Makayla Cervantes, who drilled nine kills and added 10 digs. Kylei O'Keefe tallied six kills with three blocks in the middle. The Rams (28-1) hit .333 overall and Cypress could do little to offset it with just 22 digs in the match.  Fresno setters Ally Cooper (19 assists) and Sydney Rigby (16 assists) contributed to the Rams crisp attack.

For the Chargers (24-3), Willa Allshouse had six kills. The team's most spirited player was setter Samantha Martinez, who totaled 22 assists, five digs and dropped in four kills on dump plays. 

Although the first set saw 11 ties and six lead changes, Fresno took its last lead at 19-18 and went on a 7-2 run to capture the game. In set 2, the Rams controlled things at 13-6, Cypress cut it to 15-13, but again Fresno used its big hitting to outscore the Chargers, 7-2, to close out a second set triumph. In the final set, it was all Rams as they never trailed, taking a 5-1 lead, then increasing it to 19-11. A Cervantes kill ended the short match.

Fresno hit .467 in the final set (17-for-30) with just three errors. Cypress hit .126 overall and top hitter Samantha Madrid was limited to four kills in only 16 attempts. .

Fresno faces South No. 1 and state No. 1-ranked Grossmont in a semifinal at 5 p.m.
