San Diego Mesa's Todd Curran inducted Into CCCSCA Hall of Fame
SAN DIEGO - Longtime San Diego Mesa College women’s soccer head coach Todd Curran was inducted into the California Community College Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Thursday, December 4, at Saddleback College.
Across Curran’s 22-year tenure at Mesa, his teams earned 20 postseason berths, missing the playoffs only twice. Under his watch, the Olympians captured 12 Pacific Coast Conference championships and were consistent contenders at both the regional and national levels.
Curran compiled an overall record of 329–101–59, a .733 winning percentage. He was named Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year seven times and earned PCAC Women’s Sports Coach of the Year honors in 2000, 2008, and 2019. Also in 2019, he was also selected as the Southern California Regional Coach of the Year.
In 2007, his team was ranked No. 9 nationally, followed by No. 6 in 2008, No. 20 in 2016, and No. 3 in 2019. His 2008 and 2019 squads remain the only women’s soccer programs in San Diego County ever to reach the Final Four of the state championships. The 2019 team advanced to the state championship game and finished as the runner-up.
Before joining San Diego Mesa College, Curran earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of California, San Diego, while also competing for the Tritons men’s soccer team. His play guided the Tritons to three postseason appearances, including NCAA National Championships in 1991 and 1993. He then completed a master’s degree in kinesiology at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
“Todd is a fixture here at San Diego Mesa College and in the California Community College soccer community,” stated Dean and Athletic Director Ryan Shumaker. “His ability to genuinely connect with his student-athletes is unrivaled and his passion for the coaching profession is respected by anyone that has had the privilege to witness his work, tireless recruiter, relentless development of skills, and a master at building teams with amazing chemistry, there’s no doubt why he has been given the honor of being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Well deserved!”
While his athletic achievements are significant, Curran believes his greatest successes are beyond the pitch. He has always emphasized academic excellence, ensuring student-athletes understand the value of leaving Mesa with a degree. “Having success in the classroom creates opportunities professionally and personally,” he remarked. “Seeing my student-athletes transfer, earn their degrees, and compete at the next level is one of the accomplishments I am most proud of.”
“Winning 329 games is a culmination of all the great players, assistant coaches, and support I’ve received through the years,” Curran reflects. “There is no way I would have reached this milestone without the dedication of the student-athletes. Their countless hours and willingness to make sacrifices is something I will always appreciate.”
“I want to express my sincere appreciation to all of my assistant coaches over the years. Their time, dedication, and commitment to our soccer program have been invaluable. I am equally grateful to my student-athletes, who consistently pursued excellence on the field year after year. My thanks also extend to the support staff at Mesa, as well as our administrators and my colleagues, whose advocacy and encouragement strengthened our program in countless ways. I have been truly fortunate to work alongside such exceptional individuals, and I am proud that together we built one of the premier women’s soccer programs in the state.”
