Cypress uses big weekend to vault to top of CCCSIA women's soccer poll
SAN BERNARDINO - After a weekend road trip that saw them outscore their opponents 14-1, and a newly-minted No. 2 ranking in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches Assocaition, the Cypress College women’s soccer team is on a roll.
They capped it off Tuesday by reaching the top spot in the weekly CCCSIA state rankings.
The Chargers (5-0-0) earned three first place votes, and 200 points in the weekly poll of sports information professionals. They narrowly eked out their Orange Empire Conference foe, Santiago Canyon, in the poll, as the Hawks (5-0-0) also earned three first place votes, and 199 points.
Both teams will take the next week off, as they ramp up for OEC play. Cypress will be off until they open OEC play Sept. 28 at home against Irvine Valley, while Santiago Canyon will face No. 13 Antelope Valley next week before facing Orange Coast to open conference play.
Las Positas (5-0-0) is not far behind the two OEC teams, also receiving three first place votes with 197 points in the poll.
From there, the list staggers down, with a third OEC team, Saddleback (4-0-0) moving up one spot to fourth this week with 170 points, while Folsom Lake (one first place vote, 165 points) rounded out the top five.
Ventura (4-1-0) tumbled down the poll this week from the top spot down to No. 7, while two teams bounded up the poll from last week, as Antelope Valley (4-1-0) jumped from a tie for 20th to a tie for 13th with City College of San Francisco, which was just out of the top 20 last week.
