Soccer State Championship Fields Set
The four men's teams and four women's teams for the 2014 State Championships have been determined.
All eight teams will play in the semifinals on Friday with the championship games set for Sunday at Mt. SAC in Walnut, Calif.
On the men's side, No. 1 from the South Mt. SAC (13-4-6) and No. 2 Cerritos (13-3-7) both hail from the South Coast Conference. Though neither won their conference this year, the both had been at the top of the Regional rankings all season.
Mt. SAC will face No. 2 from the North De Anza (20-1-1) and Cerritos will face No. 1 from the North and undefeated Taft (21-0-2). Both games will be at 4 p.m. on Friday.
The men's championship game is Sunday at 10 a.m.
All four men's teams have won the state title before. The Mounties won four-straight titles from 2009-2012 before Hartnell broke the streak last season.
Cerritos has one state title, in 2008. Taft also has one from 2007.
De Anza is the furthest removed from its last title coming in 1997. They also won in 1994.
The women's semifinals are Friday at 7 p.m. with the championship at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Two undefeated teams enter the final four along with the two-time defending state champions and the underdog.
No. 1 from the South is Santiago Canyon at a perfect 20-0-3. They will play No. 2 from the North and 11-seed Consumes River (11-7-6).
The No. 1 seed from the North is also undefeated, Fresno City at 22-0-2, and the Rams will take on the defending state champions from Cerritos (22-1), the No. 2 seed from the South.
Cerritos has won four state titles since 2007, including the last two. Santiago Canyon has two titles in the past decade, coming in 2006 and 2009.
Fresno City won the first recorded state title in 1988 and Consumes River is looking for its first-ever state title in women's soccer.
