Fresno City women advance
The Fresno Bee
Fresno City College women's soccer coach Oliver Germond has preached all season about the need to get out to quick leads.
His Rams did just that Saturday.
Jenna Thomason and Rianna Chavez each scored in the first 8 minutes as top-seeded Fresno City defeated No. 16 Evergreen Valley 4-0 in the first round of the NorCal Regional.
"When we're up, it makes us play more relaxed," Germond said. "We have good balance and it seems like every game someone steps up."
It was the 13th shutout for the Rams (18-1-3). Goalkeeper Tara Togami had four saves.
"She's so consistent," Germond said. "She made some pretty amazing saves -- with that diving save and that tip over. Just having that confidence in your goalkeeper makes a huge difference for the rest of the team."
Chavez finished with two goals for the Rams, which will face No. 8 Foothill at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The Owls were 2-0 winners over No. 9 Modesto.
