CCCAA State Wrestling Championships (Day 1)

VICTORVILLE: After the first day of the CCCAA State Wrestling Championships, the top two ranked teams in the state are in a dead heat. Top-ranked Cerritos College, the 2014 state champion as well as the state runner-up the last three seasons, Fresno City College, who are ranked #2, have both compiled 84 team points. The second day of the CCCAA State Championships will get underway at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at Victor Valley College, with the championship matches slated for 7:00 p.m.
In addition to the two schools locked in a tie, they each have six wrestlers that have qualified into the semifinals. This place Mt. San Antonio College (66.5 team points), as well as fourth place Sacramento City College (62.5) each have five wrestlers that will be competing tomorrow in the semifinals. Of the 20 schools in the state championships, 15 of them have at least one wrestler who will have a representative in the semifinals.
Several upsets highlighted the day, including at 133 pounds when #3-seeded Jake Schaeffer of Palomar upset the state's top-ranked Aaron Mora of Fresno City, 4-2 in sudden victory. Another top-ranked wrestler from Fresno City, 141-pound Clinton McAlester suffered a 16-14 loss in sudden victory against #4-seeded Kevin Kelly of Mt. San Antonio. It was more of the same at 149 pounds, as Alex Aniciete of Lassen College handed top-ranked Joseph Dominguez of Mt. San Antonio a 4-3 loss, while the #2 and #3-seeded wrestlers from Cerritos, Blake Vasquez and Kennith Kirk, fell victim to losses, which drops them into the consolation round.
