San Luis Obispo - The state's top-ranked Cerritos College Falcons compiled 205 team points on Saturday night at Cuesta College to capture their second straight Southern California Championship. The Falcons won four individual championships, had four more place second and qualified 11 for the CCCAA State Championships, which will take place at Victor Valley College next weekend.
Only second place Palomar College, who finished with 171 team points and had three individual champions, qualified the maximum 12 wrestlers to the state championship, while third place Mt. San Antonio College also qualified 11.
The biggest upset of the day came at 285 pounds, as defending state champion and top-ranked Seville Hayes failed to qualify for the state championship. An injury while facing teammate Chance Eskam in the semifinals forced Hayes to try and wrestle back in the consolation round. But his injury was too much for him to overcome and he dropped three straight matches, including his last in the true sixth place match.
