San Joaquin Delta, Palomar headline first CCCWBCA regional polls of the year
SAN LUIS OBISPO - Sierra College and head coach Brandie Murrish begin the defense of their championship as California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) started the 2022-2023 season yesterday.
Sierra was ranked to return to the final eight in the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) preseason poll. They were outvoted by San Joaquin Delta College, the state's runner-up team last season, for tops in the North Region. Trailing are College of the Sequoias in third, City College of San Francisco four points behind, and Fresno City College in fifth.
South Region’s poll was topped by Palomar College. Mt. San Antonio College is the runner-up. Moorpark College is in third place. Mt. San Jacinto College holds the four-spot. East Los Angeles College ompletes the top five.
CCCWBCA will continue its support of Coaches vs. Cancer. There will also be Women in Sport games supporting Title IX and honoring its 50th anniversary. This is in part due to the national Equality in Women’s Sports movement that was founded at CCCAA-member Riverside City College.
The regular season will end Feb. 17. Regional postseason berths will be determined two days later. The finals will return to West Hills College Lemoore. Quarterfinals will commence on March 10. Semifinals will be the following evening with the championship game on Sunday afternoon. The Sophomore Showcase four-year recruiting event is also on the weekened docket with details to be announced. It will not be certified for NCAA Division I programs to attend.
