Variety of South teams high in CCCSIA Women's Basketball State Top 20
CCCWBCA Regional Polls (Jan. 26)
PASADENA - There was very little change in this week's California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) Women's Basketball State Top 20 Rankings with only one new team jumping on board while San Joaquin Delta continues its occupation of the #1 spot with 13 out of 14 first-place votes.
The voting shows the South Region's mix of top teams with six of the seven Southland conferences represented among the top eight ranked.
Delta (21-1) routed Modesto by 30 points to extend its overall win streak to 14 games. At #2, Moorpark hit the century mark for the second straight game, defeating Allan Hancock 100-61, while upping its win streak to 10. Red-hot #3 Mt. San Jacinto (20-2) won three games last week over Victor Valley, San Bernardino Valley, and Copper Mountain to run its win meter to 19 in a row.
At #4, Palomar (19-2) has won 13 of 14 with victories last week over Imperial Valley and San Diego Mesa. Slotted again at #5 is Glendale (19-1) as the Vaqueros needed a last-seconds basket by Tess Oakley-Stinson to get past unranked Antelope Valley, 52-50, and then beat Santa Monica for their 19th consecutive triumph.
Irvine Valley (17-2) moved up a spot to #6, needing overtime to beat #12 Cypress (77-63) after a 19-point win over Riverside City. The Lasers have won 10 of their last 11. At #7, Diablo Valley (16-3) defeated Modesto in its only game last week while #8 Mt. San Antonio (17-5) opened South Coast Conference North Division play with a slim 47-43 win over #20 Rio Hondo and then a 10-point win on Monday v. LA Trade Tech. The Mounties win streak is at nine games.
Merced (16-5) romped past Reedley by 36 points to remain at #9 and Ventura (16-4) moved up one slot to #10. The Pirates, who had not scored more than 68 points in any previous game, totaled 95 v. Oxnard and then 94 v. Santa Barbara City in their Western State Conference North Division-opening wins.
In the second 10, Santa Barbara dropped out with newbie Butte moving into the top 20 at #19. The Roadrunners (18-5) have Golden Valley Conference wins in the last six days over Lassen, Feather River and Siskiyous. The biggest move up was City College of San Francisco (15-6) two spots to #17 with convincing victories over Laney and Ohlone. The biggest drop belonged to #20 Rio Hondo, down seven positions after #15 Pasadena City dropped the Roadrunners to 0-2 in SCC North play, 71-55, last Friday.
