SACRAMENTO - Chynna Cochran tied the game on a layup with 11 seconds left and Victoria Wilson canned two free throws with four seconds remaining as 18th-seeded MiraCosta College used a big fourth-quarter to upend 15th-seeded College of the Canyons, 70-69, on Wednesday night, providing one of two upset road wins during opening-round action of the CCCAA Women's Basketball Regionals.
Mission College delivered the other upset, getting 22 points from Maya Austin to beat 16th-seeded Shasta and earn a date on Saturday with the NorCal Regional's top seed, Diablo Valley (27-1).
Five games comprised the opening-round of regional play, bringing each of the NorCal and SoCal brackets down to 16 teamsheading into this weekend's second-round action. In the North, Jasmine Henderson tallied 22 points and teammate Shayla Newman had 20 as No. 15 Santa Rosa held off No. 18 Lassen, 59-58. No. 16 Cerritos capitalized on 27 points from sophomore Jesenia Rendon and 11 three-pointers to upend visiting No. 17 Citrus, 72-61, while No. 14 Cypress downed No. 18 Imperial Valley, 73-50, to round out the other games in the SoCal bracket.
Cerritos (21-10) will now travel to face the state's top-ranked team, Moorpark (28-1) on Saturday while Cypress (20-9) will take on No. 3 East Los Angeles (25-6), and MiraCosta (17-8) goes to No. 2 L.A. Trade Tech (26-4). Santa Rosa (12-14) will head over to the Central Valley and play No. 2 Merced (26-3) on Saturday.
