LIVERMORE, Calif. – Identical twins Megan and Melissa Daily each had 24 points as College of the Siskiyous reached the finals of the California Community College women's basketball tournament for the first time with a 73-51 semifinal victory over Palomar College Saturday evening at Las Positas College.
Siskiyous (31-1) will take a state-leading 29-game win streak into Sunday's 3:30 p.m. championship game against the survivor of the late semifinal game between 7-time state champions (each) Ventura and Mt. San Antonio.
The Golden Eagles from Weed took a 14-0 lead at the outset and led all the way. But Siskiyous did have to survive a few late rallies by the Comets, who closed to the gap to 3-points at 38-35 with 6:55 left in the third quarter on a layup by Ariana Hernandez. Hannah Thompson and Melissa Dailey responded with 3's to put Siskiyous back in control.
"They never got the lead," said Siskiyous coach Tom Powers. "And we built the lead back-up in the third quarter." It was 56-41 at the end of the period and COS moved out to a 25-point margin at 67-42 with 6:15 left in the game.
Thompson, the state's No. 2 scorer with a 25-point season average, hit double figures as usual - but with 11 points this time. She also had four assists and six rebounds. State scoring leader Melissa Dailey (26.0) also had five assists, three seals, and seven rebounds. Her sister Megan Dailey stepped up from her usual 13-point average with the 24-point output and also contributed four assists, seven rebounds, two steals, and a block. Destinee Jones was the game-leading rebounder with 12 for COS.
Still, Palomar (28-3) held the Golden Eagles to equal their lowest point total of 2017. Siskiyous beat Shasta, 73-54, on Feb. 1 during a perfect (10-0) Golden Valley Conference campaign. The only season loss for COS came, 65-60, to Sierra College on Nov. 11.
The Pacific Coast North Conference champion Comets from San Marcos got 22 points from Hernandez, who also had six rebounds and a steal. Regina Sheffield had nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.
