LIVERMORE, Calif. - Katie Campbell had 31 points, seven rebounds and five assists as Ventura College defeated City College of San Francisco, 79-66, in Friday's quarterfinals of the California Community College women's basketball tournament at Las Positas College.
Rhianna Dougan added 21 points for state No. 6 ranked Ventura (28-5), which will face top-ranked and defending champion Mt. San Antonio (31-2) in Saturday's 7 p.m. semifinal game. Coast North champion San Francisco, ranked seventh, finished 27-4.
CCSF led most of the first half – until the Pirates rallied just before the break with a nine-point run to take a 33-26 lead. It was 33-28 at halftime.
Although the Rams closed to within a point at 38-37 with 5:13 left in the third quarter, they were unable to gain the lead. Ventura was up by six points, 48-42, at the three-quarter mark and quickly extended the margin to 10 points as Campbell netted a pair of three's. The biggest margin was 15 points, 67-52, with 4:06 remaining. San Francisco narrowed the gap to nine points on a 3-point play by Caprice Taylor with 1:55 but could get no closer despite getting opportunities after missed free throws by the Pirates.
"We had a couple of streaks that made the difference," said Ventura coach Ned Mircetic. "Campbell made some big plays. It was her assists that gave us separation."
Ventura scored 22 points off turnovers, compared to six for the Rams. The Pirates also had an 8-2 advantage on fast break points.
Destiny Kelly led four CCSF players in double figures with 17 points. Gabrielle Vigil had 13 points while Caprice Taylor and Nahrie Pierce each had 11. Pierce had 15 rebounds.
For Ventura, Kyleesha Green had eight rebounds, eight assists, and four steals along with six points
