Cortez, Sanchez's heroics garner weekly honors

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Marley Cortez of Cerritos College and Mikayla Sanchez of Hartnell were named this week’s California Community College Fastpitch Coaches’ Association Player and Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday, April 13.

Cortez was instrumental to Cerritos’ undefeated week, going 11-for-14 while smacking a walk-off homer to defeat Canyons in extra innings. Cortez tallied three extra base hits while driving in seven and scoring six on the week. The south’s No. 2 squad is riding a 14-game winning streak.

Sanchez was the pitcher to hand No. 1 San Mateo its first loss of the season. She tossed a complete-game, striking out five hittings while allowing just four hits. San Mateo had won 32-straight games to open the season. Sanchez is now 13-4 on the year and sports a 2.64 ERA.
