Monterey Peninsula sends six sophomore softball standouts to four-year schools
MONTEREY - While the 2020 California Community College Athletic Association softball season has been cut short, the work for one of the state’s top teams in 2020 has not. Monterey Peninsula College, which was 16-1 when its season was cut short due to COVID-19, has had six sophomores accept offers to continue their academic and athletic careers at the four-year level.
Two of the six have accepted NCAA Div. I offers. Centerfielder Alexia Torculas will attend the University of San Diego, while pitcher Emma Guindon has accepted an offer from the University of New Mexico. Torculas was an All-Northern California selection as a freshman for the Wolfpack. In 2020, Torculas was batting .596 (5th in the CCCAA), with 34 RBIs, and nine home runs (3rd in the CCCAA). She posted a .651 on-base percentage and a 1.269 slugging percentage. Guindon meanwhile, was one-third of a three-woman rotation that boasted a team ERA of 0.51. Prior to the season stopping, Guindon was 4-1 with a 0.66 ERA and 48 K’s. Guindon also hit .381 with 14 RBIs.
Two more accepted NCAA Div. II offers in sophomore pitcher Jesse Dupuis and sophomore outfielder Kaylin Donovan. Dupuis, who was an All-Northern California selection as a freshman, will attend Sonoma State University, while Donovan will take her talents to Palm Beach Atlantic University. This year, Dupuis was 3-0 with a 0.53 ERA and 29 punchouts. In limited at-bats, Dupuis hit .407 with 11 RBIs. Donovan batted .400, with 16 RBI’s, and team-leading five stolen bases.
Rounding out the group were sophomore third baseman Diana Hughes and sophomore pitcher Juliette Guerrera. Hughes has accepted an offer from Westcliffe College, while Guerrera has accepted an offer from the University of Saint Katherine, both members of the NAIA. Hughes had six RBIs before the season ended prematurely and was error-free in the field. Guerrera made seven appearances out of the bullpen for Monterey Peninsula posting a 0.00 ERA, with five strikeouts, and a pair of wins.
