San Jose City's Huntze-Rooney gets milestone 800th win for Jaguars softball
SAN JOSE - Long-time San Jose City College softball head coach Debbie Huntze-Rooney reached a major milestone earlier this month. In the second game of a routine double-header with Feather River College, the Jaguars picked up their second mercy-rule win of the afternoon, a 10-0 victory in five innings. While the game was important as it helped San Jose improve to 20-1 on the season, it held extra special meaning to those involved\, including Huntze-Rooney who recorded her 800th career victory.
In her 28 seasons in charge of the San Jose City College softball program, Huntze-Rooney has guided the Jaguars to 10 Coast Conference titles, and 25 postseason appearances. The Jaguars have never finished under .500 in her tenure and have made appearances in the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships three times, including most recently in 2019. Also in 2019, Huntze-Rooney was named the Coast Conference South Division and California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association Northern California and State Coach of the Year.
Huntze-Rooney took over the reins of the Jaguars back in 1992. Huntze-Rooney currently ranks third in the career active wins list, trailing Cypress College’s Brad Pickler (1,404 wins- 34th Season) and Sacramento City College’s Tim Kiernan (983 wins - 36th Season).
