CCCAA Softball: Scoreboard l Standings
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Allie Stines had a home run and a pair of doubles as top ranked College of San Mateo swept a pair of top ten softball teams in merciful style Saturday (Feb. 25).
The Bulldogs (16-2), who moved up to No. 1 in Northern California in the Feb. 23 coaches association poll, defeated No. 7 West Valley, 10-2, and No. 9 College of the Sequoias, 9-1, both in abbreviated 5-inning games. San Mateo is ranked No. 2 in the state behind defending state champion Cypress (10-0).
Stines, a sophomore out of Capuchino High, had a line of 2’s in the West Valley game, a pair of extra base hits (a homer and a double), two RBIs, two runs scored (both in a 9-run fourth inning), two official at bats, and two walks.
It wasn’t quite that simple, however. West Valley broke open a scoreless game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. The Bulldogs then erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the frame. West Valley failed to score in the top of the fifth. So that enabled Half Moon Bay grad Ally Sarabia to end it in the bottom of the inning with a homer that provide the 8-run “mercy” margin.
Lauren Quirke had a 5-inning complete game, striking out four, to increase her Northern California pacesetting won-loss record to 8-0.
The Bulldogs didn’t waste any time taking control in the nightcap against Sequoias, scoring three times in the first inning (keyed by Sarabia’s 2-RBI double), en route to their 11th straight victory.
Emily Adams pitched the first three innings, striking out three, to improve her record to 4-1. Kate Grech closed it with a pair of K’s over the last two frames, facing just seven batters.
Stines had three hits and three RBI’s on the day, increasing her Coast North leading batting average to .540. Quirke also had three hits and is No. 2 in conference hitting at .490, followed by Aubrie Businger (.476), who joined the 3-hit barrage. Sarabia and Mackenzie Driscoll each had four RBIs.
Leaness Donn stole bases in both games and now has 16 for the season (No. 3 in the state). Following a trio of hits, she is batting .421.
NOTES: CSM will play a non-conference game at San Jose CC (7-5) on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before opening Coast North conference play on Thursday at Foothill (7-8) at 12 noon. On Saturday the Bulldogs will host Feather River (7-1), ranked No. 3 in NorCal, in a twin bill starting at 9 a.m.
