SAN MATEO, Calif. - It was perhaps fitting that the 400th softball victory by College of San Mateo softball coach Nicole Borg and her staff -- 6-4 over host Ohlone College -- also gave the State top-ranked Bulldogs a game and a half lead over the rival Renegades in the Coast North Conference.
Borg and assistants Toby Garza and Dale Bassman reached the milestone in their 12th season together directing the San Mateo program, which has reached the California Community College Athletic Association Final Four tournament each of the past five seasons. The overall record is 400 wins and just 122 losses.
Gabriella Zucchiatti had three hits, including a double, plus her 21st RBI in the first place showdown at Ohlone. Allie Stines and Aubrie Businger each added two hits, an RBI, and scored twice. Stines leads the Coast North in batting with a .481 average. Bussinger ranks third at .438. Mackenzie Driscoll had two RBIs, increasing her league-leading total to 35. Starting pitcher Emily McAdams went five innings to improve her record to 6-1, striking out three.
CSM (23-3, 4-0 Coast North) scored two runs in each of the first two innings and another in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead before Ohlone (16-6, 2-1) scored a pair in the bottom of the third.
San Mateo will remain on the road next week with Coast crossover games scheduled on Tuesday (March 20) at West Valley and on Thursday at State No. 9 ranked Monterey Peninsula, both at 3 p.m.
