3CFCA announces Pitchers and Players of the Week
GLENDORA, Calif. - The California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association recently released its Pitchers and Players of the Week for Weeks 8-10. Releases on each set of winners are below.
Week #8 Players and Pitchers of the Week Announced
The California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association is pleased to announce its Week #8 State Player and Pitcher of the Week. Freshman outfielder Sarah Fisher of Palomar College and freshman pitcher Arianna Guzman of College of the Sequoias earned the honors.
Pitcher of the Week – Arianna Guzman – College of the Sequoias
Giants freshman hurler Arianna Guzman out of Madera Ranch High School in Madera, Calif., pitched a pair of gems during Week #8 of CCCAA action. Guzman was 1-1, pitching a complete game shutout in the first game of a doubleheader with Central Valley Conference rival Porterville College, before dropping a heart-breaker in the second game, 2-1. Guzman pitched all 13 innings for Sequoias, striking out 11 batters and surrendering just seven total hits and one walk.
Player of the Week – Sarah Fisher – Palomar College
Freshman outfielder Sarah Fisher had an outstanding week at the plate for the Comets who went 3-1 against three out of Southern California top 10 teams. Fisher was 10- for-15 at the dish (.667 batting average), scoring five runs, and driving in four more. Fisher hit four doubles on the week and a home run, and didn’t strike out in her 15 plate appearances. Fisher prepped at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, Calif.
Week #9 Players and Pitchers of the Week Announced
The California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association is pleased to announce its Week #9 State Player and Pitcher of the Week. Los Angeles Valley College sophomore first baseman Rebecca Gomez and sophomore pitcher Shayla Castaneda of Monterey Peninsula College earned the honors.
Pitcher of the Week – Shayla Castaneda – Monterey Peninsula College
Sophomore pitcher Shayla Castaneda of Monterey Peninsula College went 2-0 in the circle for the Lobos. In her two starts during the week, Castaneda gave up just one total run, an unearned run in a 5-1 win at De Anza College, striking out 13 total batters. Castaneda gave up just nine total hits on the week and walked only two batters. Castaneda prepped at North Salinas High School prior to enrolling at Monterey Peninsula.
Player of the Week – Rebecca Gomez – Los Angeles Valley College
In two games during the week, sophomore freshman Rebecca Gomez of Los Angeles Valley College proved why she’s one of the top hitters in the state going a combined 7-for-10 at the dish with four runs scored and nine runs driven in. Gomez also swatted a pair of home runs, one each in the two contests, as she helped the Monarchs to a 2-0 week. Gomez prepped at Birmingham Community Charter High School in Van Nuys, Calif.
Week #10 Players and Pitchers of the Week Announced
The California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association is pleased to announce its Week #10 State Player and Pitcher of the Week. Sophomore third baseman Riah Nunley of Compton College and freshman pitcher Stephanie Cervantes of West Hills College earned the honors.
Pitcher of the Week – Stephanie Cervantes – West Hills College
Cervantes recorded career-highs with five hits (two singles, two triples, one double), six RBI and four runs scored in the Falcons’ 28-2 (5 inn) victory at Cerro Coso College on April 5. She also tossed a complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits.
Cervantes had an RBI-single in the 1st; a two-run triple in the second; an RBI-triple in the third; an RBI-double in the fourth; and an RBI-single in the fifth. She also reached base on a error in the fourth inning and later scored – going 5 for 6. Collecting RBI-hits and 10 total bases (11 including the error) in five consecutive innings are believed to be WHCC records. Cervantes prepped at Mendota High School.
Player of the Week – Riah Nunley – Compton College
Compton sophomore third baseman Riah Nunley had an outstanding week at the plate, despite an 0-3 record for the Tartars. Nunley was a combined 4 for 8, scoring four runs, and hitting four home runs. Nunley drove in 5 RBIs, and was responsible for half of Compton’s offense on the week. Nunley prepped at King/Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles.
