SAN MATEO - The College of San Mateo softball team is going to the state finals tournament for a sixth consecutive year!
The state top-ranked Bulldogs qualified for the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut (Los Angeles County), May 17-20, by sweeping visiting Sacramento City College, 9-7, and 16-5 (5 innings) in a Northern California Super Regional series Friday and Saturday (May 11-12).
CSM (39-4), the No. 1 Northern California seed, will go after a state-leading 40th win of the season against No. 4 Southern California seed El Camino College (35-10) in Thursday's 1:30 p.m. opener in the double elimination 8-team tournament, which concludes on Sunday with a noon title game. El Camino, located in Torrance, is the South Coast South Division champion.
Hillsdale High grad Mackenzie Driscoll and Ally Sarabia, out of Half Moon Bay High, put exclamation points on San Mateo's final home game of the year with towering home runs over the outfield fences, pacing Saturday's 16-hit attack over just four innings of offensive play by the Bulldogs. Driscoll, an all-state selection at catcher, had four hits in the two games, including CSM's only extra base hit on Friday, a double.
Sarabia, also the starting pitcher, had RBIs on all three of her hits, bringing in four on the day. The usual "designated player" got extra work on the mound as the third member of CSM's staff, heading into the playoffs. She pitched just into the second frame before usual starter Emily McAdams came on for three innings to get the win -- the team and conference-leading 16th of the year (16-2). All-state pitcher Lauren Quirke (Hillsdale) hurled the final inning and was the pitcher of record on Friday, where she improved her record to 15-1. Quirke had three hits in the series to maintain her team-and conference leading batting average of .477.
All Northern California infielder Aubrie Businger, a Mills High grad, totaled five hits in the two games, including a pair of doubles among three Saturday hits, raising her season batting average to .438. Allie Stines (Capuchino), state player of the year for Northern California, had four hits in the series. All-NorCal outfielder Gabby Zucchiatti (Mills) had four RBIs.
Sarabia and Driscoll lead the Coast North Conference in home runs with five apiece, just one more than (No. 3) Stines.
