Harbor Shines With Aluizo's Title, Mt. SAC Breaks SCC Champion Streak Record
Pasadena, Calif. - Despite an impressive showing by Los Angeles Harbor College, Mt. San Antonio used a pack of racers in the top 10 to extend its South Coast Conference men's cross country championship streak to a baker's dozen--13--and break a conference record for longest streak of SCC titles in any men's sport on Friday.
Mt. SAC broke a tie it had with Los Angeles City College men's basketball (1996-2007) and Mounties men's track and field (1997-2008), who both had 12-year conference runs.
Mt. San Antonio scored 33 points for the thanks to scoring their top five runners at third in Antonio Alcantar (20 minutes, 24.7 seconds), then sixth through ninth places in the SCC Championships at Pasadena's Hahamongna Watershed Park.
LA Harbor's Mario Aluizo broke a 10-year Mounties streak of individual champions as he dominated over the 4-mile course in a time of 19:37.6. The mark was nearly 33 seconds ahead of the next finisher--second place Damian Nava of Cerritos.
Aluizo, the first non-Mt. SAC champion since El Camino's Teddy Kassa in 2014, led a Seahawks trio to high placings with Sebastian Skarr placing fourth (20:29) and Miguel Leon scoring fifth (20:31.9). Skarr improved on his 11th place showing as a freshman. Placing second as a team, Harbor scored 44 points and their official average total time of 1:43.17 matched Mt. SAC.
Alcantar (20:24.17) placed 10th last year but was a strong leader in the Mounties' contingent as he was one of eight Mt. SAC racers to earn All-South Coast Conference honors (top 14). Andy Silva hit the line in sixth, followed by last year's champion Jonah Botello in seventh, Mason Dole eighth, and Daniel Estrada ninth.
Other top school performers were El Camino's Rodolfo Guzman (11th), Long Beach City's Lamech Samuel (12th), Pasadena City's Nico Radlein (22nd) and East Los Angeles' Nicolas Gomez (27th). It was a 96-runner field among the seven teams participating.
The postseason for cross country begins with the Southern California Championships on Nov. 6 at Irvine Regional Park and then the 3C2A Championships at Fresno's Woodward Park on Nov. 21.
