Huntington Beach, CA - The Long Beach City College (28-3) Men's Water Polo team set-up a rematch with their Southern California Rivals on Friday afternoon after defeating NorCal #1 Sierra College (19-10). The Vikings controlled the game from the jump, defeating the Wolverines 15-5.
Long Beach wasted no time against the defending Northern California Champions, scoring three of the first four goals of the game, with each coming from a different player (Jose Barajas, Nikola Ilic, and Vedran Latkovic). In the second, Long Beach kept that up, but Sierra matched each of their first two goals, using a Daniel Fineberg strike with 3:08 to go to keep it close at 3-5.
Unfortunately for Sierra, that's the closest they would get, as the Vikings used a 4-0 run that ended the second and opened the third to go up 9-3 after another score by Latkovic. After a late Sierra score in the third, Long Beach answered by scoring five unanswered to open up the fourth as they secured the 10 goal win.
Ilic, Latkovic, and Barajas would lead the scoring way for the Vikings with three goals a piece. Fabio Mujica assisted five goals for Long Beach and added a game high three steals, while Ilic drew a team high three exclusions. For Sierra, Fineberg had a team high three goals and game high four exclusions drawn.
The win for Long Beach sets up a rematch in the State Championship Game versus Golden West College for the first time since 2016 and the sixth time since 2010. It will also be the sixth meeting this year between the two programs. Long Beach won the first three, while Golden West has gotten the better of the Vikings in the last two. The Championship Game is set for a 12:15 PM start.
