Orange Coast still on top as volleyball playoffs approach
IRVINE, Calif. - Orange Coast, Irvine Valley and Long Beach City remain the top three teams in California Community College Men’s Volleyball Coaches Association State Poll for week 11.
But big matches with conference titles and playoff positions are on the line throughout this coming week.
Orange Coast, which has a record of 16-1 and hasn’t lost since Feb. 5, is riding a 15-match win streak. OCC got challenged for the first time in a while last Friday, however. Orange Coast had to win the final two sets to come back and beat a tough Fullerton squad in five sets. OCC won, 15-12, in the fifth.
Orange Coast takes on No. 2 Irvine Valley on Wednesday at home in a battle for the Orange Empire Conference title. IVC then closes out the regular season on Friday against No. 6 Fullerton. That contest has serious playoff seeding at stake.
Irvine Valley played one of its best matches of the season last Friday in sweeping No. 9 Golden West at home. The Lasers hit .435 as a team. Brennan To had 10 kills and hit .615 to lead the way in the 25-18, 25-14, 26-24 victory.
Third-ranked Long Beach City is a match up in the Western State Conference – South Division heading into this week. No. 4 El Camino and No. 5 Santa Monica go head-to-head on Wednesday night. If El Camino earns a victory, it would set up a showdown for the South Division title on Friday between the Warriors and the Vikings at LBCC.
In other conference races, eighth-ranked Moorpark sits one match ahead of No. 7 LA Pierce in the WSC – North Division race. The two teams face off Wednesday night with the title on the line.
And No. 10 Miramar and Grossmont are still in the hunt for the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference title. Miramar has already wrapped up a share of the title. But Grossmont defeated Miramar in four sets last Friday to move within a match of the Jets. Grossmont finishes the regular season Wednesday night with a home match against Palomar.
