San Diego Mesa's Lucas Scott earns bronze medal at 2024 USATF U20 National Championships
EUGENE, Ore. - The San Diego Mesa College track and field season concluded on a high note as freshman Lucas Scott secured the bronze medal in the javelin event last Wednesday at the 2024 USATF U20 Championships at Eugene, Oregon. A product of Mission Hills High School, Scott threw 207 feet, 5 inches, not only claiming the bronze medal but also surpassing the school record set by Kyle Wood at 203-9 during the recent 3C2A State Championships.
Scott acknowledged the role of his support system and the importance of teamwork in his success. Despite the presence of world-class athletes and top-notch facilities, he maintained his composure. He credits his solid performance to the training days and the support of his coaching staff and the administration at San Diego Mesa. “I felt really good leading up to the event,’ says Scott. “Being able to make it to the final rounds and eventually finish third with a throw of 63.22 (meters) couldn’t have gone any better. I am deeply thankful for the support and teamwork that allowed me to experience this.”
This achievement was significant for San Diego Mesa’s throws coach, Tony Griswold, who recently announced his retirement. The podium finish at the national championships was a gratifying conclusion to his career.
