Cerritos continues grip on CCCSIA poll's top spot; Skyline joins Falcons as last unbeaten teams
SAN BERNARDINO - As we hover near the midpoint of the season for most of the men’s soccer teams in the state, it’s hard to say that a win in the first game of conference play would be a “statement” game.
But if Cerritos’ 4-1 victory over El Camino on Tuesday wasn’t a “statement,” it was sure to put people “on notice.”
Cerritos remained in the top spot in the weekly California Community College Sports Information Association men’s soccer poll this week, receiving all nine first-place votes in the survey of sports information professionals that closed its voting on Tuesday.
Later Tuesday, the Falcons traveled to face the ranking’s No. 2 team, El Camino College, in the South Coast Conference opener for both teams. Cerritos outshot the Warriors 21-10 en route to handing El Camino its second loss of the year.
A third South Coast Conference team is lurking right behind in the polling, as Mt. San Antonio College finished in a tie for the No. 3 spot with Fresno City with 152 points apiece in the voting, 10 points behind El Camino. Just three points behind those two teams in fifth is Oxnard.
From there, the poll jumps down to Skyline, which remains in the No. 6 with 124 points. The Trojans, who received a first-place vote last week, are the only team in the state without a loss or tie on the season.
Cabrillo jumped up three spots to No. 7 with 121 points, while Los Angeles City, Cosumnes River, and Merced round out the top 10.
