Cerritos and its undefeated record are No. 1 in first CCCSIA Men's Soccer Poll of the season
SACRAMENTO - As most men’s soccer teams begin gearing up for conference play, there are only two teams in California that have a chance to go undefeated.
And both of those teams received first-place votes in the first weekly poll of sports information professionals from the California Community College Sports Information Association.
While there are two unbeaten teams, only one got the lion’s share of the first-place votes, as Cerritos College received seven of the eight first-place votes cast to take the top spot in this week’s poll.
The Falcons (7-0-2) have outscored opponents 29-3 in their first nine games. But they will not have an easy time holding on to their undefeated record as they begin South Coast Conference play. In the South Division with them is No. 3 El Camino – which has outscored opponents 28-5 – and in the North Division is No. 5 Mt. San Antonio. The defending state champions have two losses – one of them coming in overtime against Dallas College-Richland of Texas, in a game played in Kansas City, Mo.
But it’s not just South Coast Conference teams at the top of the poll. The No. 2 spot belongs to Oxnard. The Condors entered the week among the undefeated but fell Tuesday to Mt. SAC. They’ve been in a series of tight games, only scoring 10 goals in their seven games.
At No. 4 was Fresno City, having given up only four goals in nine games thus far this season. And tied at No. 6 was Skyline – the other undefeated team – and Los Angeles City. Skyline, which received the other first-place vote, has outscored teams 25-4 through six games, while LA City has not won in its last three games (two ties, one loss).
Rounding out the top 10 were three teams from the North: No. 8 San Francisco, No. 9 Clovis, and No. 10 Cabrillo.
