Gavilan College Athletics honors three with Bill Hooper Memorial Scholarships
GILROY, Calif. - On May 21, 2018, at the Gavilan College Scholarship Award Ceremony three former student-athletes: Richard Guevara (Men’s Soccer), Sadie Allen (Women’s Basketball) and Jennifer Rosales (Women’s Basketball) were awarded with the Bill Hooper Memorial Scholarship. All three received a $500 scholarship to continue with their education at a four-year university in the fall.
The criteria for the Bill Hooper Memorial Scholarship is based on the following; Left to right: Guevara, Allen, Rosales and Ron Hannon
- Former student-athlete who has exhausted their eligibility at the community college level
- Competed with honor
- Exemplified good sportsmanship
- Will Transfer to a four-year university.
Bill Hooper, founder of Student Insurance, was an advocate for student-athletes all over California. In 1960, Hooper, along with law makers, changed the California Education Code by requiring insurance coverage for all student-athletes representing institutions. An avid sportsman, Hooper competed for Stanford University on a basketball scholarship and was a member of the 1942 Cardinal men’s basketball team that won the NCAA National Championship.
