MADERA - Eight teams - four each from Northern California and Southern California - and a total of 60 golfers will converge on Dragonfly Golf Club on Sunday for the 3C2A Men's Golf State Championship as the best community college players in the state battle it out over 36 holes.
Golfers will tee off in foursomes beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday in the first round before starting at 8 a.m. for the final 18 holes on Monday. According to its website, Dragonfly Golf Club is the longest course in California, measuring 7,261 yards from its black tees but a monstrous 8,073 yards from its "Way-Back" tees. It plays to par 73.
Three teams from last year's tournament at Soboba Springs Golf Course in San Jacinto return to this year's field. Saddleback, which was runner-up just two shots behind winner College of the Canyons, is back looking for its first banner since 2007 and its seventh overall. Reedley, the 2016 champion, was third a year ago while Sierra finished seventh. Saddleback's Clayton Smith, who shot a 68 in the first round a year ago on his way to a fifth-place finish, is the highest-placing golf from the 2022 championship.
Teams qualified for this year's state championship during regional play last week. Saddleback captured top honors in the south after taking a 17-stroke lead in the first round and then winning by 20 shots over Desert, which was second. The Bobcats' Carson Adams was a two-shot medalist winner after rounds of 68 and 72. Reedley put together back-to-back rounds of 363 and 364 for a 727 total that left the Tigers six shots in front of second-place Fresno City. Napa Valley's Markus Nanpei had rounds of 68 and 74 to finish at par-142.
Temperatures are expected to be hot with highs of 99 on Sunday and 97 on Monday on the forecast
