Kim leads Canyons to early lead at men's golf state championship

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - Jae Kim shot a 2-under-par round of 70 during the Monday's morning round of the one-day, 36-hole CCCAA men's golf state championship being played at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course to give College of the Canyons (379) a six-stroke lead over Cypress College (385) midway through the event.
Big 8 Conference MVP Mason Troike (Folsom Lake College) posted an even-par round of 72 while Dylan Hall (Cypress College) and Western State Conference co-MVP Joey Herrera (Ventura College) both came into the clubhouse at 73. The average score through the morning round was 80.
There are 17 players within five strokes of Hall and Herrera, including Orange Empire Conference MVP Everett Najera of Riverside (74). Michael Lingren (Canyons), Matt Rafter (Cypress), and Ben Eckels (American River) each posted a 75.
Following Canyons and Cypress in the team standings are Riverside (390), Folsom Lake (397), and Ventura (399). Defending state champion Reedley is currently in sixth place (408).
Canyons already has seven state golf titles to its credit. Cypress is looking for its first state golf title while Riverside captured its only golf title in 2014.
