CCSF moves into semifinals with 74-54 victory over Antelope Valley
LIVERMORE, Calif. - Leading by nine at the half, City College of San Francisco dominated Antelope Valley College in the second half, outscoring the Marauders, 39-28, before the Marauders closed it up in the final minutes during the Rams' 74-54 win in the quarterfinal round of the CCCAA Men's Basketball Championships at Las Positas College on Thursday afternoon.
CCSF, seeded second in the north, improved to 29-2 and advances to the semifinals on Saturday where it will face either Yuba College or San Diego City College at 5 p.m. Antelope Valley, fourth-seeded from the south, ended its season with a 22-11 record.
it was CCSF's height advantage in the first half that showed its strength as the Rams out-rebounded the Marauders, 24-15. Michael Wright collected eight boards to go with his six points. Armani Collins was the leading scorer for the Rams with 10, including a pair of three-pointers. Eddie Stansbury added seven in the Rams' first half where they led all but the first 57 seconds.
For the Marauders, Jailen Gill had 10 points and nobody else had more than four which Osi Nwachukwu and Antone Warren matched. Both teams were in double figures in turnovers due to the frenetic end-to-end play. Neither team shot well in the half as AVC hit just 39% and was just 1 for 7 from beyond the arc. CCSF was somewhat better at 42%, but that included a 5 of 16 showing from the three-point line
Nine offensive rebounds helped the CCSF cause and allowed it an 11-4 advantage in second-chance points.The Rams' bench also contributed to the tune of an 18-4 advantage over the as CCSF led 35-26 at the half.
The second half was more of the same for CCSF as it pounded the boards for a 46-21 advantage. The Rams shot 63% from the field while holding the Marauders to just 39% in the second half. The Rams were 10 for 28 from beyond the arc and the Marauders were just 5 of 15.
Collins led all scorers with 25 points while Eddie Stansbury added 14. Wright was game's the leading rebounder with 11. The Rams' 16 offensive rebounds kept the ball in their half of the court numerous times for second chances and helped them hold a eight-point advantage in points in the paint and had a 10-point gap in second-chance points. The Rams bench contributed with a 44-18 advantage in the game.
For the Marauders, D'Mauria Jones led the way with 13 followed by Gill with 12 and Hall who added 10.
