COMPTON, Calif. - The El Camino College Compton Center men's basketball team scored 70 points in the paint with six players in double-figures in the team's 101-86 win over LA Southwest on Friday evening.
The Tartars now sit alone on top of the leaderboard in the South Coast Conference with a perfect 4-0 record in conference play, 21-3 overall. The team's 14-game winning streak is the longest active streak in the state.
ECC Compton Center opened up the game going inside early on a putback layup by sophomore Calvin House followed by three more layups by different players. The Tartars only allowed the Cougars to tie the game twice at the 4-4 and 6-6 marks but controlled the game the rest of the way, opening the margin up to as many as 17 in the first half and 24 in the second half.
The team counted six quick points in the second half on a layup by sophomore Michael Chavers before back-to-back steals by sophomore Alonzo Taylor, resulting in a pair of layups.
Sophomore Jayvon Brown led all scorers with 21 points, counting five boards, three assists, and two steals. Taylor added 18 points with three assists and five of the team's 11 steals. House and Chavers posted 14 each, while sophomore Anthony Fitzpatrick and Davis tallied 12 and 10, respectively.
Chavers and sophomore DaJion Henderson led the Tartars with nine rebounds each.
LA Southwest's Jordan Young finished the game with 21 points. The Cougars now sit at 12-10, 3-1.
The Tartars finish out the first round of conference play at Long Beach (6-14, 2-2) on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m.
