Top-Ranked Tigers Stay Unbeaten With Road Win at No. 2 Saddleback

Mission Viejo, Calif. — The state's top two ranked 3C2A football programs met Saturday night at Saddleback College Stadium, and No. 1 Riverside City College strengthened its hold on the top spot with a 38-21 victory over National Southern League rival and No. 2 Saddleback College.

The Tigers improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play behind a fast start, explosive offensive plays and a defense that produced two interceptions, four sacks and a blocked field goal. Riverside finished with 369 yards of total offense and built a 31-14 halftime lead before holding off Saddleback's second-half push.

Quarterback Christopher Cooper completed 15 of 31 passes for 250 yards and led the Tigers on the ground with 48 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 18 carries.

Riverside opened the scoring on its first possession, driving 57 yards in 12 plays before James Holt made a 38-yard field goal with 10:14 left in the first quarter to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers' defense provided the next breakthrough. Aloalii Lealofi intercepted a pass at the Saddleback 45-yard line and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown with 1:41 remaining in the opening quarter. Holt's extra point extended Riverside's lead to 10-0. Earlier in the quarter, Riverside also blocked a 47-yard field-goal attempt, with Cyrus Savaiinaea recovering the loose ball.

Riverside pushed its advantage to 17-0 early in the second quarter when Cooper capped a three-play, 43-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Cooper opened the possession with completions of 9 and 30 yards to Logan Quates, and Holt's extra point made it 17-0 with 11:02 remaining in the half.

Saddleback scored on its next possession, but the Tigers answered immediately. Cooper found Jewellz Parm for a 78-yard completion to the 4-yard line, then scored on a 4-yard run on the next play. Holt converted the extra point to give Riverside a 24-7 lead with 8:49 left in the second quarter.

The Tigers added their fourth touchdown before halftime on a six-play, 54-yard drive. Jaylen Gooden broke off a 12-yard run, Cooper connected with Jayden Bowens for gains of 10 and 22 yards, and Cooper finished the possession with a 15-yard touchdown run. Holt's extra point pushed the Tigers ahead 31-7 with 4:15 remaining in the second quarter.

Saddleback scored late in the first half and then converted a Riverside turnover into a touchdown early in the third quarter, trimming the Tigers' lead to 31-21 with 8:03 left in the third.

Riverside's defense answered at a pivotal moment early in the fourth quarter. Markus Jones intercepted a pass at the Riverside 40-yard line and returned it 43 yards to the Saddleback 17. Quates followed with an 8-yard rush, and Kurelle Thomas scored from 9 yards out two plays after the turnover. Holt's extra point made it 38-21 with 13:01 remaining, restoring Riverside's three-score advantage.

Cooper's 250 passing yards were distributed among several Tigers receivers. Parm caught two passes for 78 yards, Camden Connor had four catches for 54 yards, Quates made two receptions for 39 yards and Bowens finished with three catches for 36 yards.

Thomas added 20 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries, while Gooden contributed 27 rushing yards on seven attempts and an 18-yard reception. Connor also provided value in the return game, totaling 38 yards on four punt returns, including a 25-yard return that helped establish field position on Riverside's first touchdown drive of the second quarter.

Lealofi and Jones combined for 88 interception-return yards, with Lealofi accounting for the game's only defensive touchdown. Kevin Green and Matthew Casas combined for an 18-yard sack, while Dean Kirkland registered consecutive 4-yard sacks on Saddleback's final meaningful possession. The Tigers totaled four sacks for 32 yards and held Saddleback to 5-for-16 on third down.

Holt finished 1-for-1 on field goals and 5-for-5 on extra points for eight points. Dawit Crain averaged 41.5 yards on four punts and placed two punts inside the 20-yard line.
