De Anza's Jackson credits team for record-setting success
CUPERTINO - De Anza College quarterback Antevious Jackson is making the most of his second chance.
The sophomore from Woodbridge, VA – who originally had plans to play at a community college in Southern California – continues to prove that hard work and perseverance can pay off.
As Jackson prepares for Game 7 of the season, his statistics are equally impressive as his highlight clips.
He currently leads all 66 California community colleges in passing efficiency (a staggering 206.0) and percentage (74.9). He ranks second in touchdowns (21 to just 1 interception) and third in yards per game (301.0).
Jackson ranks first in nearly every major QB category among Northern California teams and American Division teams.
De Anza College head coach and play-caller Joe D'Agostino said Jackson's classroom approach to studying film and his daily preparation has led to operating at a high level on Saturdays.
"Above all else, Antevious embraces competition and he is dedicated to his teammates," D'Agostino said.
"He spends time to hone his craft. He knows we can make mistakes in practice against our really good defense, so he can get dialed into the game plan. His numbers are off the charts, but he understands we have more work to do."
Jackson is quick to credit the entire team for a 6-0 start and its potential to have a historic season.
"I have a lot of trust in our offense, defense, and special teams," Jackson said.
"We feed off each other every day. From the offensive line and our playmakers – receivers and running backs. Our defense gets us the ball back with turnovers. The kicking game is strong. Our coaches put us in position to play complementary football."
Sophomore WR Devin Dawkins (5-9, 185, Howard, MD), who leads the team with 32 receptions, said Jackson's preparation Monday through Friday is a major factor.
"He builds the trust in practice so we are ready on Saturday," Dawkins said.
"He works hard, loves the game, and wants to win. He's our leader in the huddle."
Sophomore offensive tackle and team captain Reggie Dillon (6-5, 340, Long Reach, MD) said that Jackson is the complete dual-threat quarterback.
"Tey is one of one," Dillon said.
"He has electric pocket presence. He makes all the throws. I have never played with a quarterback like this before. It's a lot of fun."
Jackson calls 2024 a "prove it" season – at both the De Anza football program level and for him personally. He also continues an emphasis on academics to earn scholarship offers.
With a high-powered offense (48.7 ppg, No. 2 in California) and a top-ranked defense (state best 11.0 ppg allowed), the tone is different at DA, said Jackson.
"Our process continues to focus on 1-0 each week and keeping the positive energy," he said.
"We believe in each other, even when outsiders might not."
