City College of San Francisco, Riverside are tops in both coaches and SID polls as football season gets underway
JCAB Release (PDF)
SAN MATEO - Following a form following opening week, there is little change this week in the coaches poll of California Community College Athletic Association football teams, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. Defending champion City College of San Francisco continues to be the choice of coaches, ahead of Riverside CC, Ventura, College of San Mateo, College of the Canyons, Golden West, and American River -- in the top seven.
The CCCSIA poll of sports information also released its Week 1 rankings with CCSF and Riverside sitting atop the poll and San Mateo and Ventura in the next two. Both polls are listed below.
Defending CCCAA champion CCSF opened with a 31-20 victory over Santa Rosa JC, while state finalist Riverside topped Mt. San Jacinto, 59-36. Ventura blanked neighbor Moorpark, 49-0.
Things could change this week. Many ranked teams clash in non-league games. Five of six teams in Friday night games are ranked: No. 7 American River at No. 10 Laney, No. 19 Butte at No. 13 Diablo Valley, while No. 1 CCSF visits Sacramento.
Top games Saturday, Sept. 10: #17 Long Beach at #2 Riverside, #3 Ventura at #16 SD Mesa, #4 San Mateo at #12 Sequoias, Southwestern at #5 Canyons, #11 Palomar at #6 Golden West, #15 Cerritos at #8 Fullerton, #24 Saddleback at #9 Mt. SAC, #22 Bakersfield at #14 El Camino, Chabot at #18 Reedley, #20 Fresno at Sierra, #21 Modesto at Santa Rosa, #23 East LA at Chaffey, San Bernardino at #25 Hancock.
American Division: Feather River can extend its 11-game winning streak, hosting Cabrillo. Mt. San Jacinto faces its first American game, at Antelope Valley. The visiting Eagles hope to bounce back from the short end of a 95-point (59-36) scoring duel with National power Riverside. Four early winners meet head-on: Merced at Foothill and Citrus at Grossmont.
Weather and wildfires continue to impact the schedule. Saturday’s Contra Costa at Siskiyous game has already been postponed to the added make-up date at the end of the season, Nov. 19. Weather conditions postponed last week’s Santa Monica at El Camino opener.
