SAN MATEO - Riverside City College is back atop the poll of California Community College football coaches, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau, this week while also maintaining hold in this week's California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) rankings. The defending (2019) state champion Tigers defeated formerly No. 12 Saddleback College, 33-6, and gained eight-first place coaches votes this week, totaling 337 points, and now have a 15-game winning streak (including a season-opening forfeit). The Tigers matched their first-place votes from the coaches with eight from the SIDs, finishing with 270 points.
Former JCAB poll leader College of San Mateo defeated then No. 9 Butte, 21-14, and extended its regular-season winning streak to 18 games - but dropped to No. 3 in the poll with 314 points. Ventura moved up one spot to No. 2 with 319 points after outscoring then-No. 19 El Camino, 58-37. The top seven teams changed positions. San Mateo, with three first-place votes, totaled 258 points and is second among the sports information association and is followed by City College of San Francisco, Ventura and College of the Canyons in the top five.
Leading top performances: 308 yards rushing by Kenyard Edwards, Jr., of Victor Valley on 38 carries, with three touchdowns (including 90 yards for the initial lead). But Glendale scored last, on a 12-yard run by Kevin Armstead, to win, 34-30. Armstead rushed for 199 yards and two scores (507 yards by two RBs).
All teams in this week’s top 15, except Ventura, play other ranked foes Saturday. Riverside hosts No. 19 Golden West, San Mateo visits No. 6 Fresno, No. 4 San Francisco entertains No. 12 American River, and No. 5 Canyons hosts No. 22 Palomar. The schedule kicks off Friday night (Sept. 24) with Santa Rosa at #16 Diablo Valley.
