West Hills Coalinga football has three moving on to next level
COALINGA - West Hills College Coalinga football head coach Justin Berna has announced Matthew Estrada, Chad Rivers, and Ty'Rese Washington have all signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at four-year universities. Estrada is headed to the University of Virginia's College at Wise, Rivers is off to Friends University in Kansas, while Washington is taking his talents to the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota.
Estrada played his lone season for the Falcons in 2019. The 6-1, 310-pound offensive lineman came to West Hills from Madera South High School.
"Matthew is an extremely hard worker and leader," said Berna. "I am happy and proud of his progress here and excited to see his success on and off the field at UVA Wise."
UVA Wise is located in Wise, Va. and competes at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the South Atlantic Conference.
Like Estrada, Rivers saw action for West Hills as a freshman in 2019. The 6-0, 335-pound offensive lineman is originally from Prichard, Ala. and attended C.F. Vigors High School.
"Chad was our most improved player this past offseason," Berna said. "I'm happy and proud of him for earning a scholarship. I know he will do great things on and off the field at Friends University."
Friends University is located in Wichita, Kan. and competes at the NAIA level as a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Washington is the lone sophomore out of the group. The 6-2, 195-pound defensive back came to Coalinga from Lower Richard High School in Hopkins, S.C. As a freshman in 2018, Washington earned All-Valley League honors after grabbing five interceptions.
"Ty'Rese is a great football player and young man," said Berna. "I am proud of him and know he will do great at Sioux Falls on and off the field."
Sioux Falls competes as the NCAA Division II level and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Berna expects more to sign in the weeks to come, but with student-athletes being granted another year of eligibility because of COVID-19, he says many should be returning to his program for the upcoming fall season.
