Chiefs' Andy Reid continues long line of winning Super Bowl coaches from the CCCAA

SAN MATEO - Will Andy Reid become the first former California Community College football player to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles as head coach? The former honorable mention All-America offensive lineman at Glendale Community College is already in select company after leading the Chiefs to victory in SB LIV last year.

 

Ex-CCC players have coached a dozen winning Super Bowl teams, starting with former College of San Mateo player John Madden(Oakland Raiders) in SB XI (1977). There were eight championships in 12 years, from 1981 (Tom Flores, Oakland Raiders/Fresno CC) to 1992 (Joe Gibbs, Redskins/Cerritos College). Included in that run were three titles by Bill Walsh (49ers/College of San Mateo) in 1982, 1985, and 1989. Gibbs also had three Rings, adding 1983 and 1988. Flores won his second title in 1984 (Los Angeles Raiders), completing five straight years of championships by CCC products. 

 

Add to the list, in 2000, Dick Vermeil (St. Louis Rams/Napa JCplayer and head coach, San Mateo assistant coach) and Pete Carroll (Seahawks/College of Marin) in 2014 – defeating John Fox (Broncos/Southwestern College).

 

EVERY FULL DECADE TRADITION STARTED BY MADDEN: Former CCC players have coached a winning Super Bowl team in six straight decades since Madden started the tradition in 1977. (The 1970’s were the first full decade of Super Bowls, which began in January 1967.)

 

21 SUPER BOWL HEAD COACH APPEARANCES: This will be the 21^st head coach appearance by a former California CC player!  W-L record: 12-8 -- with 2021 pending. 

There have been three head-to-head match-ups (mandating at least three losses): 

SB XV (1981): Tom Flores defeated Dick Vermeil (Eagles), 27-10.

SB XVIII (1984): Flores defeated Joe Gibbs (Redskins), 38-9.

SB XLVIII (2014: Pete Carroll defeated John Fox (Broncos), 43-8.

Jim Fassel (New York Giants/Fullerton College) lost in SB XXXV to the Baltimore Ravens (Brian Billick), 34-7.

The remaining four losses were all to Bill Belichick (Patriots). See list below.

(Note: Dahlen held the all-time overall record with his seven rings until Bill Belichick, not a JC product, won his eighth in 2019 --- but with a former CCC player out of CSM, Julian Edelman, as the game MVP.)

-- A Coors Light commercial has been airing boosting Tom Flores for NFL Hall of Fame selection. All of the SB winning coaches who are former CCC players are in the California Community College Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, headquartered in Visalia. 

-- SB LV came close to having the first head-to-head match of former CCC quarterbacks. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers (Butte) and Buffalo’s Josh Allen (Reedley) lost in the conference championship games. Rodgers, in 2011, was the first former CCC player selected as a Super Bowl MVP.

-- New Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staleypontificates about his valuable experience as associate head coach at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College (2010-2011). He did not play JC football.
