Still a logjam at apex of football polls as Riverside, San Mateo lead the way
November 6, 2019
SAN MATEO – College of San Mateo has maintained its month-long lead in the JC Athletic Bureau poll of California Community College football coaches, entering November. After pacing the state throughout October (including a mid-month tie with Riverside), the Bulldogs totaled 317 points from coaches again this week (same as last week), now four points ahead of Riverside. Both teams received six first place votes while No. 3 Saddleback got the remaining top nod and 305 points. They are the three remaining unbeaten National (state championship) Division teams, all 8-0 overall and 3-0 in their leagues. Riverside and Saddleback appear headed for a Nov. 16 Southern League showdown in Mission Viejo. CCCAA state playoffs begin Nov. 23.
NCFC: San Mateo is the only NorCal unbeaten. But the Bulldogs face teams with just one league loss apiece the final two weeks of Bay 6 play: hosting Chabot Saturday and visiting No. 7 City College of San Francisco Nov. 16. The other two NCFC leagues also have clear leaders. American River (NorCal League) is ranked fifth after beating Butte, 14-7, last week. Fresno (Valley League) is co-No. 8 after edging Modesto, 26-24, Both face second place teams with single league losses Saturday: ARC at No.15 Shasta, Sequoias at Fresno.
SCFA: Canyons is No. 4 this week after winning its Northern League showdown with Ventura, 48-38. No. 12 Long Beach co-leads the Northern going into finales, Saturday at Canyons and Nov. 16 with Ventura. No. 22 Fullerton hopes to stay in contention for a Nov. 16 Central League showdown at league leader No. 6 Mt. San Antonio following this Saturday’s contest with visiting 11th ranked El Camino.
AMERICAN DIVISION GAMES: No. 14 Chaffey concludes regular season play Saturday in a title showdown at West Los Angeles, also unbeaten in Metro League play -- but with two games remaining. No. 20 Foothill (8-0) must still face its top two Pacific League foes, visiting District rival De Anza (also 3-0 in league) Saturday and closing with Los Medanos Nov. 16. No. 25 Reedley and No 23 Monterey Peninsula put their 4-0 Golden Coast records on the line Saturday in Monterey.
