MISSION VIEJO - Jacob Barlage is at ease with conflict and confrontation.
The 6-foot-4 freshman quarterback passed for four touchdowns and ran for another as Riverside City College finished the regular season unbeaten with a 56-25 victory over Saddleback College on Saturday night to claim the Southern California Football Association National Southern League title.
"Like they say in the war, 'It's through the air and on the ground,' and we've got them both going," said Barlage, a Valley View High graduate.
Barlage's 310 passing yards accounted for over half of the 613 total yards for Riverside (10-0 overall, 5-0 Southern League), which earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SCFA Playoffs beginning next weekend.
"We had to play a complete game in every phase because Saddleback is an outstanding football team, and this was a great matchup between two undefeated teams. It's too bad one team had to come up short," Riverside City head coach Tom Craft said.
Thomas Kinslow led all players with 174 rushing yards on 23 carries, and Reggie Retzlaff had five receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns for Riverside, which remained one of only two unbeaten teams in Southern California.
"This means a lot to us. Being 10-and-0 really shows how much we've worked as a team," Retzlaff said.
