College of the Canyons surges to No. 2, Butte makes big jump to No. 4 in CCCSIA poll
Football rankings page l JCAB Coaches Poll (Oct. 1)
SACRAMENTO - Thanks to a come-from-behind 33-28 win over No. 2 Ventura College on Saturday, top-ranked Fullerton College was able to hold on to its No. 1 ranking in the California Community College Sports Information Association football poll released on Tuesday. The rest of the top 10 wasn't as stable with plenty of movement including a two-spot jump by College of the Canyons to No. 2 and Butte College's continue surge, which now puts it at No.4.
With the dust settling from losses by two of the top three ranked teams, most of the CCCAA football teams will take a break from action this weekend before starting the second half of the season next week. For now, though, parity is making an appearance throughout the state and the rankings reflect that. Fullerton's (5-0) 24th consecutive win wasn't easy but it did allow them all 13 first-place votes and 260 points.
Canyons (5-0), though, is only 18 points behind after turning back Golden West, 26-9 to join Fullerton as one of just two unbeaten National Division teams in the state. That moved COC from No. 4 to No. 2 with Riverside City - a 49-21 winner over No. 19 San Diego Mesa - in the third spot. Canyons' new home was created thanks to Butte's second upset in as many weeks. Last week it downed previously unbeaten City College of San Francisco and on Friday the Roadrunners traveled to No. 2 Laney for a 38-21 victory.
That win gave Butte (4-1) a four-spot jump to No. 4 with Ventura (4-1) and Laney (4-1) still garnering enough respect from the voters to remain near the top at No. 5 and No.6, respectively. CCSF (4-1) rebounded to beat College of the Siskiyous, 19-16, and take the No. 7 position in the poll with Mt. San Antonio (4-1), Southwestern (4-1) and Santa Rosa (4-1) completing the top 10. College of San Mateo (3-2), unbeaten Mt. San Jacinto (5-0), Modesto (3-2), Long Beach City (3-2) and Chabot (4-1) are the next five while Chaffey (4-1), Cerritos (3-2), Reedley (5-0), Hartnell (5-0) and Fresno City (2-2) finish things up.
It'll be a light week for scoreboard watchers this week with just a dozen games on tap, most of them among American Division teams. Fullerton will take its bye in a couple of weeks and will travel to Palomar on Friday for a National Division game in the south while Fresno City and Siskiyous will make up their postponed game from earlier this season for a NorCal National Division matchup.
Chaffey, ranked 16th, will head to Glendale for the only game involving a top 20 team.
