BUTTE VALLEY - Michael Kutch wanted to ensure his teammates he could do his job come game day.
The Butte College linebacker earned that trust as he racked up five sacks in the Roadrunners’ dominant 42-21 victory over City College of San Francisco Saturday afternoon at Cowan Stadium.
The Roadrunners totaled 11 sacks for a loss of 53 yards and dealt the No. 2-ranked team in the state its first setback of the season.
“We came out here and played to our full ability. We trusted everybody,” Kutch said. “We really stepped it up.”
Butte set the tone early as it was able to score on the second play from scrimmage. Jordan Kress caught a 73-yard reception from Brandt Hughes that put the Roadrunners up 7-0 in the first quarter.
“I’m really excited for the kids. They prepped extremely hard all week. Guys were playing hard, guys were playing banged up,” said Butte head coach Rob Snelling. “I couldn’t be prouder about the way they performed throughout the whole game.”
Hughes completed 7 of 14 passes for 147 yards passing and one touchdown. He also barreled into the end zone for two quarterback sneaks. Running back Deonta McMahon ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Kress caught five passes for 108 yards and one touchdown.
The Rams evened the game 7-7 when quarterback Jack Newman connected with a wide open Christian Willis for a 54-yard touchdown.
Butte (3-1) answered in the second quarter when Cam Howes snagged an interception that put the Roadrunners at the Rams’ 43.
Later in the drive, Hughes punched it up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown to give Butte a 14-7 lead.
The Roadrunners were able to add on heading into halftime after Tomas Colino’s 24-yard field goal attempt hooked to the right, keeping it a 14-7 advantage going into the break.
San Francisco (3-1) mustered up some momentum after halftime. Newman completed three consecutive passes to get to the Butte 41. Newman capped the drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Baylei Coston to tie the game 14-all in the third quarter.
Following a Butte three-and-out, San Francisco continued its run. Newman found DeShawn Collins for a 19-yard gain. Then Frank Hall caught a 10-yard reception and Collins added a 14-yard carry to get the Roadrunners 1.
